Georgia on my mind

g e o r g i a

we got to Georgia and our first stop was Atlanta. we went to Atlanta underground which was the street level originally in the mid 1800's until the 1920's when the street level was raised on top of it. it has an interesting history like in the 20's when it was used for speakeasys and other illegal activity. now it is used for a shopping mall.
we walked around downtown and went to the capitol building.

the summer Olympics were in Atlanta in '96 so we went to the Centennial Olympic Park which was built for them.

we left Atlanta after spending a few hours there and drove to Savannah. we wanted to go peach picking since we drove by a bunch of peach tree farms but we talked to a local that said that the peaches wouldn't be ready until July.

I couldn't get enough of all the trees!
we drove over the bridge into Savannah at evening time and the lighting on all the trees and the city was beautiful.

we almost stayed at this hotel but they messed up our reservation and were all booked up. the sign was great though and I had to get a picture.

all of the streets looked like this and the huge live oaks were covered with spanish moss.
they had cute little parks like this all over the city. we went to the park where the bench scene in Forrest Gump was filmed. the bench wasn't there but was in the city museum. the bench was actually put there just for the movie.

we walked along the river where they have a bunch of cute shops and restaurants in old historic buildings. we both love old buildings so we mainly stayed in the historic district the whole time. Savannah has one of the largest historic districts in the U.S and the whole thing is pretty incredible. we went into a bar to use the bathroom and I felt like I was walking back in time into an old pub.

I am not a huge taffy fan but it was interesting to watch them make it on an old machine in the candy shop.

we went to the railroad museum that had cool old trains you could walk around and go in.

they had a lot of historical tours that were fairly expensive we got one of the tour maps and did our own driving tour.

there was so much to see and the city is so cute I definitely want to go back here to visit. that is what I have felt about almost every city we visited though!
