voodoo city

l o u i s i a n a

we left Houston sunday evening and got into Louisiana around 1 am and we hit an armadillo almost immediately after crossing the border. Jason found a campsite online which ended up being 3 miles in the backwoods amongst thick trees and swamps. the campsite was a big grass field surrounded by trees. I was very uneasy to say the least about being so far back in the woods of Louisiana. when I got out of the car though I saw fireflies in the trees and the moon was on the grass and I could see how magical the place was. we slept in the car because there were too many mosquitoes and the grass was wet and swampy. we woke up in the morning and we could really see how beautiful the area was with the fog and trees. we had never seen anything like it in Arizona and I was glad we slept there despite how nervous I was.

that morning we left to tour Oak Alley Plantation a sugarcane plantation near the Mississippi river. the house was beautiful and it had two rows of giant live oak trees leading up to the front. the original slave cabins were not intact but they had rebuilt them to how they once were.

we headed to New Orleans next and walked around the French Quarter and Bourbon Street. we were really disappointed in it and wanted to get out of there as soon as possible. we enjoyed all the old buildings but the streets were filthy and reeked of pee and throw up. there was trash all over the streets and scuzzy people everywhere. we felt so dirty afterwards! my pictures I took are very deceiving because I was sure to only get the buildings and not the people and trash. we did have one celebrity sighting, Kristen Schaal, who was a side character in Flight of the Conchords, 30 Rock and a lot of other shows. we honestly didn't know her name so we didn't approach her as she walked by.

Jason got fried alligator tail and it was surprisingly pretty good. it tasted like chicken but chewier. we tried beignets for the first time too which are fried pastries with powdered sugar on top. so good! our time in New Orleans wasn't completely terrible!
