I've gone to look for America...

as a graduation present Jason fulfilled my dream of traveling across the US. Jason took three weeks off of work and we left right after my graduation and celebration with my family. we had a general idea of where we would go and what we wanted to see but overall there was very little planning. i wanted to feel out the trip as we went and not have a strict schedule of where we had to be. it worked out very well for us and it was more of an adventure that way.

our first destination was San Antonio Texas to visit our friends. we wanted to drive all night but made it until about 3 am until we were both too exhausted. we didn't want to get a hotel so Jason found this abandoned gas station online from a free camping site. it was pretty eery to sleep there but we were so tired that we didn't care. we slept in the car with the doors locked and the keys in the ignition so we could have a fast get away in case of crazy homeless people.

we made it to San Antonio the next day exhausted from four hours of poor car sleep. our friends Steve and Amanda took us to the riverwalk which is a walkway along the river that has restaurants and shops. we walked by the alamo and around downtown.

the next day we drove to Austin. we only spent a few hours there because Jason's brother and wife were expecting us. I was disappointed to leave so soon because I really enjoyed the vibe and the artsy feel. Austin is the Portland of Texas. we did get a good taste of the city though and I hope to go back there soon.

we went to this sign shop that had this great Austin sign. i was tempted to have him make a Rowley sign but figured we wouldn't have anywhere to put it :)
you can't go to Austin without eating at a food truck. Torchy's tacos was excellent.

we went to the baylor street art wall next. it is a huge public art project that has different levels of walls that people are free to graffiti. it is constantly changing and there were a few people painting their art while we were there. it was really cool to see and an interesting thing unique to Austin. I could have spent a lot more time there.

in Houston we hung out with Jason's brother Kent and his wife Brigette. they took us to eat at a cool spot by the water with restaurants and carnival rides. the next day we went to a wildlife animal park where we fed ostriches and camels from our car.

we loved Texas and had a great time with our friends and family. Texas was a lot more green than we had expected (anything is compared to AZ) and we are going to try to visit more often.
